music is therapy.

Think about that title for a second. Music isn’t just a billion dollar industry or a form of entertainment, its much more than not. Not just for us who listen and hear it, but for those who play it. It’s a way of letting things out, things we wish never happened, things that happened to us for no fault of our own or events we never want to forget. This is what makes music so invaluable to us.

For me, music helped me through a couple of difficult stages of my life. The reason I love metallica is because many songs reached out to me and became more than just the bands philosophies, stories or creations… they became mine also. Something there connected and lyrics meant more than just what they were intended for, they became part of my life. This is the power of music. Its not always the lyrics. Sometimes the music itself can imitate part of you. It can be any type of music, from classical to heavy metal, from ballads to rhymes even. Heres a few songs that mean more than just a bit to me.

Stillborn (acoustic version) by black label society.
Whatever is to be said of this songs original version, which I think is a pretty decent metal track, this version totally blew me away. The lyrics and tone of wyldes voice had much more emotion and the acoustic guitar speaks almost as much as zakk himself. A truly beautiful song.

Astronomy by blue oyster cult.
Also covered by metallica, and incredible epic of a song. For me its about a journey, the soft intro and the thunderous chorus, gives me shivers down my spine everytime I listen to it. Possibly one of my favourite songs ever.

Space cadet by kyuss.
Kyuss are possibly one of the most overlooked or unknown bands to not get due recognition. A sound that is their own, and this song for me is possibly the pinicle of a great list of tracks. Meaningful and magnificent.

Mosquito song by queens of the stone age.
Following on from kyuss, josh homme founded queens of the stone age with nick olivieri. Another song I would happily describe as epic, I love the guitar and the big booming classical section. Homes vocals are fantastic and almost haunting.

Little wing by jimi Hendrix.
Both instrumentally and vocally I would say is one of hendrixs finest moments. For me its all about theres always someone there for you, whether its friends family, or most often in my case, myself.


S&M by metallica.
Yes it’s a whole album, but taking a group of songs and making them even more incredible is a huge thing to do, and its pulled off thanks to metallicas talents and micael kamen’s (rip) adaptability for the san francisco philharmonic orchestra. From the intro to the end, there’s so much passion and intensity going on it requires many plays. No leaf clover a then new song written specially is an overlooked metallica classic, battery is even more monumental than usual and outlaw torn is simply huge.



Theres probably a lot more songs out there but these are the core as to what makes me me.
